WHAT IS THIS?
You are warmly invited to join us for "A Time of Refreshing, Re-Focusing & Equipping with Barb Shelton" on Friday March 21, 2003 (evening) and Saturday, March 22nd, all day. The event will begin Friday evening, March 21st, with a general session called "The Heart of True Education." We hope that couples will attend this session together, as it presents the heart of Barb's message, and Dad can thus be aware of and connected to what this is all about. If the husband takes in the information with his wife, he will be much better equipped to process it with her.
But
she goes far beyond the "why's" and also gives many many
helpful, practical, rubber-meets-the-road tools that you can begin using
now, but mostly your thinking and the way you approach homeschooling
will be transformed. This, in turn, will begin freeing you up in
ways you never thought possible ~ or never even wanted to be free
in, but will now see quite differently! |

"BARB SHELTON"? (Barb in her kitchen)
Barb Shelton is the author of eight books for homeschoolers including "Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la" and the Homeschool Guide-a-log. [Click here to see them.]
Her heart is to inspire parents to pursue God's unique plan for the education of their children, to listen to God's voice amid the many loud voices of the world. And she offers much practical help in doing so. You'll be challenged, irritated, and moved to laugh, cry, think and re-think your views about education, and best of all, get set free ~ or freer ~ in the Lord! (Click here to learn more about their ministry.)
(That's her in a nutshell, but for those who want to get to know her a bit more personally, you can find out more about Barb than you ever wanted to know or thought possible if you click on the above photo of her.) |
WHO IS THIS SEMINAR FOR?
The bulk of this seminar is for all homeschoolers, no matter what the ages of their children.
Other parts are specifically for those approaching or IN the high school years ~ or those who'd like their fears alleviated NOW ~ and then yet another small portion is for those with children ages 12 and under. If high school is on the horizon within the next two or three years, you would do yourself a great favor by attending all high school related sessions. There is much to consider and think through and prepare for!
Write-ups on all the workshops can be accessed by clicking on any of the little clipboards in the Agenda section. Here's a breakdown of which sessions are for whom:
"High School Organizing, Record-Keeping & Frameworks"
"Creating High School
Classes"
"Hearing God 101; Homeschooling the MOM first!" "12 Steps to Preparing Heart 'n' Soul 'n' Guts for the High School Years" "A Season of Re-education for Mom (& Dad)"
"Purity & Integrity in
Romance &
Relationships"
"Flexible Organizing & Record-Keeping for Tots~'Tweens" [MAYBE; this one may be changed.] ("Tweens" are "in beTWEEN" tots and teens!!!)
Just as a general guideline, my suggestion is that if you have children in the younger age group ~ 12 and under ~ and within two years of being in high school, you would want to attend ALL of this. |

~* LUNCH *~
Delicious boxed lunches will be available for $6.00! People may bring their own sack lunches if they want. There is a place on the registration form to sign up for the lunch.
(From Barb: I'm SO excited about this option! It will help us get so much more fellowship out of our lunchtime together! Thank you, Dianne, for coordinating this!) |
~* AGENDA *~
(Note: there may be a few changes to this, but, if so, they will be minor.)
FRIDAY EVENING:
8:10pm ~ 9:10pm - Beauty For Ashes: REDEEMED!!!
9:10 ~
9:30pm -
Question & Answer Time
9:30 - Close with
Prayer
[11:30 - This is the point at which I suggest those with children age 12 and under (and no high schoolers) join us for the remainder of the seminar.]
4:20 - [NOTE: This seminar may be replaced by a different one; we're still trying to decide. Let Barb know if you have a preference. This one (below) ? Or another from this page?] Flexible Organizing & Record-Keeping for Tots ~ 'Tweens (40 min.) ("Tweens" are "in between" tots and teens! ;-D ) This last session is for parents with children ages 4~12ish; if you only have children 13 and up, you will not need this session. If you want to stay for the final Q & A session but do not have younger children, you are welcome to take a breather and peruse the book table during these two sessions and give yourself a little "reading oasis." Many have enjoyed grabbing one of my books and retreating to a cozy corner where they can have a good chunk of time to really start reading it, with no interruptions. (Bring slippers, a pillow, and a travel mug of your favorite beverage!)

~* REGISTERING *~
1 ~ First contact the coordinator, Dianne Bradley by email or phone (509-684-0387), and let her know you will be coming. This will help us know how many to plan for as we go.
2 ~ Then print out the Registration Form and mail it to Dianne along with the appropriate fee. (If you are NOT registering for the seminar and just want to contact Dianne by email, here is a plain one for you: Click here.)

(not being) AT THE SEMINAR
Click on the little bear-in-the-mug directly above to go the explanation (on this page) of how we will be handling the matter of "children at the seminar." We realize this is a sensitive subject for some, especially since homeschooling is all about children! So we ask that you carefully read this to see how we have decided to handle this.

~* WRITE-UPS *~ FOR NEWSLETTERS AND NEWSPAPERS
If you'd like all the above info in one place for your publication, here (below) are two options for you. The first one is formatted more appealingly, as for a flyer, webpage, or online newsletter; the second one is box-formatted as for a text-only newspaper.
And here's the simpler box-formatted version that's more appropriate for a newspaper:

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS! ~From Barb~
If you have never heard this message before, you will still get plenty out of the seminar. Anyone is welcome to attend! However, if after spending some time at this website (called "Homeschool Oasis") and the Article Chart, you are sensing that this message is for you, and that God has brought you to this place, you will get the absolute MOST out of our time together if you have read whatever books I have written that are for the level you are at, child-wise.
The Homeschool Guide-a-log is for all, no matter what the ages of your children. (If you read everything in my Article Chart, you will get almost everything in the Guide-a-log.) So this book is for everyone.
Then if you have older children, 11 or 12 and up, you will want to get Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la and have read as much of that as possible BEFORE the seminar.
Those with children 12 and under will want to get the Jumpstart Navigator and be as familiar as possible with it.
It is very likely that this is the only time our paths will cross this side of Heaven. I do not do a lot of speaking, and will most likely not be doing another seminar in this area ~ at least not before your children graduate. Therefore it is going to be the most profitable and enjoyable use of YOUR time if you have read as much as possible before the seminar so that you will come prepared to get as much out of me being there in person as possible. If we are only "breaking ground" ~ just becoming familiar with my message ~ you will not get nearly as much out of this, or your time, as you could if you had.
Many will hear of this seminar later on, closer to the date of the event, and will thus not have as much time to go through my books beforehand, but even a few days of reading will get your mind and heart better prepared to get the most out of this! And if you are really unable to prepare yourself in this way, just come with shock absorbers and be sure to have spent as much time with the Lord so that you are ready for a greater spiritual and mental jolt than you might have had otherwise!
Go to this page, Books by Barb Shelton, for a list of everything I have written, and pray about where the Lord would have you start. Note: You do NOT need to have read everything I have written to be ready for this! Just the ones mentioned above will be plenty! I will have all my books for sale at the seminar.

~* NOTE TO PARENTS *~ BARB'S VIEWS ON CHILDREN AT MEETINGS |
|
Please read this before coming to the seminar!
Many of us have been to meetings where distracting children keep those present from fully being able to enjoy and get the most out of the meeting. I have NO desire to be offensive or hurtful to anyone, but in order to provide a seminar that is refreshing to the group as a whole, and one that makes teaching the seminar as easy as possible for me as the speaker, we need to let our attendees know that, except for nursing babies ~ six months and under ~ that are still young enough to be quiet and not distracting, you will need to work out other arrangements for your children while you attend this seminar.
And if, at any point, a baby is being at all distracting to others (even if they are smiling), we expect the parent to be considerate of all ~ speaker and attendees ~ and promptly remove the child from the room.
I am not alone in my perspective on this; many other moms have shared the same sentiments with me. In fact, here is what one mom shared with me:
I don't know of anyone who would relish the job of having to someone to remove their child from the room, so we hope that all will be sensitive to this and act accordingly so that all may get the most out of this intense day, and none of those hosting the event will have to get a migraine headache worrying about the possibility of offending a precious sister in the Lord.
(If you are offended by or disagree with the above, please click on the smiling face for further explanation of my views and my heart on this matter.)
(Click on your back button to get to the same spot you were just at above.) |
