WHAT IS THIS?

You are warmly invited to join us for "A Day of Refreshing, Re-Focusing & Equipping with Barb Shelton" on Saturday, March 23rd, 2002.  The event will begin with a general session called "Out of Fear & Burn-out; Into Freedom, Focus, & Refreshment" on Friday evening, March 22, which couples will hopefully attend as it presents the heart of Barb's message, and Dad can thus be aware of what this is all about.

Saturday's multi-faceted seminar (which Dads are also welcome to attend, but which is designed for Moms) focuses on topics of vital interest to burning-out homeschoolers as well as brand new and wanna-be homeschoolers.

Come and learn about Barb's "lite" approach to homeschooling.  If, in Matthew 28:11 Jesus says "My yoke is easy, my burden light," why is the "burden" of most homeschoolers so heavy?!?  With vulnerability, humor, God's Word, Barb helps us find out why ~ and remedy the situation!

But she goes far beyond the "why's" and also gives many many helpful, practical, rubber-meets-the-road tools that you can begin using now, but mostly your thinking and the way you approach homeschooling will be transformed.  This, in turn, will begin freeing you up in ways you never thought possible ~ or never even wanted to be free in, but will now see quite differently!

WHO'S "BARB SHELTON"

ANYWAY?

Barb Shelton is the author of eight books for homeschoolers including "Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la" and the Homeschool Guide-a-log.

Barb's heart is to inspire parents to pursue God's unique plan for the education of their children, to listen to God's voice amid the many loud voices of the world. And she offers much practical help in doing so. You'll be challenged, irritated, and moved to laugh, cry, think and re-think your views about education, and best of all, get set free ~ or freer ~ in the Lord!

Barb and her husband Dave (who is "the wind beneath her wings") operate a home-based ministry to homeschoolers from their home in Longview, WA, primarily through the books that Barb has written and audio-taped seminars she has produced.  [Click here to see them.]

WHO'S THIS FOR?

Most of this seminar is for all homeschoolers, no matter what the ages of their children.  Other parts are just for those approaching or IN the high school years (or those who'd like their fears alleviated NOW), and then yet another portion is for those with children ages 12 and under.

The difficult thing about describing this seminar is that it is multi-faceted, several different topics and focuses for different homeschoolers, depending on the ages of their children.  Much of it would certainly be beneficial for all, but someone with a five-year-old does not need the "nuts and bolts" of high school planning at this point.

Therefore, it is important that each one considering coming carefully study the Agenda below, and prayerfully make a decision based on not only where you're at now, but where you're headed within the next two years or so.  Here's a breakdown of which sessions are for whom:

~ FOR HIGH SCHOOL:
(which includes parents

with children who'll be of high school age within 2~3 years):

"The High School Years: Preparing Heart 'n' Soul 'n' Guts"

"High School Organizing, Record-Keeping & Frameworks"

  "Creating High School Classes"

~ FOR ALL HOMESCHOOLERS:

"Hearing God 101; Homeschooling MOM first!"

"A Season of Re-education for Mom (& Dad)"

~ FOR PARENTS WITH CHILDREN AGE 4~12:

  "Flexible Organizing & Record-Keeping for Tots~'Tweens"

("Tweens" are "in beTWEEN" tots and teens!!!)

"Real-Life Learning Ideas, Tools 'n' Tips."

Just as a general guideline, my suggestion is that if you have children IN the younger age group ~ 12 and under ~ and within two years of being in high school, you would want to attend ALL of this.

PRICE / CONTACT

From Peg Rockwell

the Seminar Coordinator

This is being handled a bit differently than the norm...  There will be no charge for this life changing event. Instead, a love offering will be  taken at the seminar.  This will be used to cover Barb's travel expenses, but more importantly just to show Barb how much we appreciate all she has done to make our homeschooling journey easier and more enjoyable.  After the workshop you'll understand Barb's approach to homeschooling based on the verse in Matthew 28:11 where Jesus says, "My yoke is easy, my burden light". Please prayerfully consider what the Lord would have you give to help support Barb's ministry and show your gratefulness.

On a personal note, by the grace of God and Barb's books, we (my 14-year-old daughter and I) are cruisin' through her high school days.  We love Barb's ideas!!  So many bail out of homeschooling when it comes to high school.  Barb makes it so "doable"!!

AGENDA

FRIDAY EVENING:
7 ~ 9pm - Out of Fear & Burnout; Into Focus, Freedom & Refreshment   (Workshop is 1.5 hrs; then Q & A time)

SATURDAY:

9:30 - High School Organizing, Record-Keeping & Frameworks  (1 hour)

10:35 - BREAK
(10 min.)

10:45 - Creating High School Classes
(1 hour)

[11:30 - This is the point at which I suggest those with children age 12 and

under (and no  high schoolers) join us for the remainder of the seminar.]

11:45 - STRETCH BREAK
  (5 min.)

11:50- High School: Preparing Heart 'n' Soul 'n' Guts
/ First 20 min.   (1 hr. total)
99% of what I cover in this workshop is for everyone. It's just that most people are still dealing with it at the high school level ~ and either dreading high school or just deciding NOT to do it ~ because they never face or deal with these fears! One gal told me her oldest was only 9, "...but I have read your whole book and want you to know that I am SO glad I did!!! Now my fears are almost totally GONE and I am actually LOOKING FORWARD to high school!" So they are doing themselves a HUGE favor by coming to this one!  It's not even a bit overwhelming. You will actually be better prepared to homeschool your younger children, and will approach the high school years without the same nagging fears most everyone else has!  Plus you will start having more enjoyment of it!  I know a horrible panicky feeling used to shoot through my guts every time I thought of "HIGH SCHOOL"!!!
(Thus the word "guts" in the title of the workshop.) The first two high school seminars of the day probably would be overwhelming for those with younger children and no high schoolers, but NOT this one!

12:15 - LUNCH
(Sack or go out; a map will be available at the workshop of nearby fast food restaurants)

1:15 - High School: Preparing Heart 'n' Soul 'n' Guts
/ Last 40 min.   (1 hr. total)

1:55 - STRETCH BREAK
(5 min.)

2:00 - Hearing God 101
(45 min.)

2:45 - BREAK
(15 min.)

3:00 - A Season of Re-education for Mom (& Dad)
(30 min.)

3:30 - Q & A Time; then Small-group session
(30 min.)

3:50 - BREAK...
(Read this first before reading on!)

These last two sessions ( below) are for parents with children ages 4~12ish; if you only have children 13 and up, you will not need this session.  If you want to stay for the final Q & A session but do not have younger children, you are welcome to peruse the book table during these two sessions and give yourself a little "reading oasis."  Many have enjoyed grabbing one of my books and retreating to a cozy corner where they can have a good chunk of time to really start reading it, with no interruptions.  (Bring slippers, a pillow, and a travel mug of your favorite beverage!)

4:00 - Flexible Organizing & Record-Keeping for Tots ~ 'Tweens*
(30 min.)

4:30 - Real-Life Learning Ideas, Tools 'n' Tips
(30 min.)

5:00 - Q & A session
(30 min.)

5:30 - Done!

*"Tweens" are "in beTWEEN" tots and teens! ;-D )

HOW TO GET

THE MOST OUT OF THIS!

~From Barb~

If you have never heard this message before, you will still get plenty out of the seminar.  Anyone is welcome to attend!  However, if after spending some time at this website (called "Homeschool Oasis") and the Article Chart, you are sensing that this message is for you, and that God has brought you to this place, you will get the absolute MOST out of our time together if you have read whatever books I have written that are for the level you are at, child-wise.

The Homeschool Guide-a-log is for all, no matter what the ages of your children.  (If you read everything in my Article Chart, you will get almost everything in the Guide-a-log.)  So this book is for everyone.

Then if you have older children, 11 or 12 and up, you will want to get Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la and have read as much of that as possible BEFORE the seminar.

Those with children 12 and under will want to get the Jumpstart Navigator and be as familiar as possible with it.

It is very likely that this is the only time our paths will cross this side of Heaven.  I do not do a lot of speaking, and will most likely not be doing another seminar in this area.  Therefore it is going to be the most profitable and enjoyable use of YOUR time if you have read as much as possible before the day of the seminar so that you will come prepared to get as much out of me being there in person as possible.  If we are only "breaking ground" ~ just becoming familiar with my message ~ you will not get nearly as much out of this as you can.

Many will hear of this seminar later on, as we get closer to the date of the event, and will thus not have as much time to go through my books beforehand, but even a few days of reading will get your mind and heart better prepared to get the most out of this!  And if you are really unable to prepare yourself in this way, just come with shock absorbers and be sure to have spent as much time with the Lord so that you are ready for a greater spiritual and mental jolt than you might have had otherwise!

Go to this page, Books by Barb Shelton, for a list of everything I have written, and pray about where the Lord would have you start.  Note:  You do NOT need to have read everything I have written to be ready for this!  Just the ones mentioned above will be plenty!  I will have all my books for sale at the seminar.

~* NOTE TO PARENTS *~

OUR VIEWS ON CHILDREN AT MEETINGS

Please read this before

coming to the seminar!

Many of us have been to meetings where distracting children keep those present from fully being able to enjoy and get the most out of the meeting. We who are planning this event for you have NO desire to be offensive or hurtful to anyone,  but in order to provide a seminar that is refreshing to the group as a whole, and one that makes teaching the seminar as easy as possible for Barb, we need to let our attendees know that, except for nursing babies ~ six months and under ~ that are still young enough to be quiet and not distracting, you will need to work out other arrangements for your children while you attend this seminar.

And if a baby is being at all distracting to others (even if they are smiling), we expect the parent to be considerate enough to promptly remove the child from the room.  This is not all in my mind; many other moms have shared the same sentiments with me. In fact, here is what one mom shared with me:

"I love my children dearly, but know that there are times and places for them to be and not to be. It is very upsetting to me when I've given up a day with my children to be ministered to myself and have the distraction of other people's children. It was especially hard when my kids were younger. I even feel this way when my husband and I go out to dinner alone. When I need a meal without the distractions of my own children, I get kind of cranky being distracted by other people's children. I even proposed to a friend of mine with a restaurant that there be an adult only section."

By "distracting" ~ for the purpose of my seminars ~ we mean "able to be heard or seen" which would include not only crying, but also fussing, whispering, playing, walking or crawling around, etc. If it becomes obvious that we have different views of what exactly is "distracting," one of the hostesses of the event will ~ as kindly, and as discreetly as possible ~ ask you to remove your baby from the room… not because we don't love you or your little one, or because we enjoy embarrassing  people, or because we want you to miss out on the seminar, but because we have a responsibility to those who have given up an evening and/or a day of their lives to join us, as well as to Barb who is serving the group by giving us this seminar. (If you have never taught a seminar, you can't imagine how much concentration goes into keeping one's thoughts in order.)  None of us putting this seminar together relish this responsibility, so we hope you will be sensitive to this and act accordingly so that all may get the most out of this intense day, and none of those hosting the event will have to get a migraine headache worrying about the possibility of offending a precious sister in the Lord.
