Homeschool Launch Course

"A Season of Re-Education"

offered by

of

Homeschool Oasis

This course, created and offered by

Barb Shelton, is located HERE at Udemy.com

This course will launch you into viewing "education" in a whole new way! You will see your children as more than just "school kids" who need to have curriculum poured into their heads.

It will launch you into discovering and creating a whole new way of life, and will give you the needed tools to feel confident to teach your children and transform your relationships with them for the better.

Considering that "Education is not the filling of a head, but the lighting of a fire," this course will equip you to learn how to light a fire that, rather than burning out your children with too much “school at home” will help your family soar above the burn-out norm.

In this course, Barb Shelton, veteran and pioneer homeschooler, who homeschooled their three children for 24 years, from K-graduation, will cover a wide variety of topics that will give you a fresh perspective on “all the above.” It will redirect those who have been homeschooling for years and are burning out, even (especially), and give them new hope and focuses.

Most families merely drag through their children's childhood, which they only get ONE of, missing out on ALL sorts of opportunities for true learning, bonding, and preparation for real life. Soon enough they’ll be gone, with lives of their own. Help make these years count in the most meaningful of ways, and launch them into a lifetime of learning.

7 Ways to Equip Yourself for Successful Homeschooling

by Barb Shelton

$7

As you start – or even re-start – to homeschool, there are things you can, and even need to do to get yourself equipped, set up, and prepared in order to homeschool successfully. Of course, what we mean by “success” in homeschooling is going to make a huge difference in how we get equipped and set up! Because “as we think, so we go”!

Having homeschooled all three of our kids from start (birth) all the way to high school graduation, I have a few things to my advantage. Hindsight really is 20/20! Looking back, I can see what would have made our experience fuller and richer…

Knowing what I myself needed and used, I have also created several resources that will be helpful to you as well! These have become my life work.

Can you still be “successful” if you don’t use my ideas? Sure! Because there are different ways to be successful – according to what you value. But these “7” will help you be successful at whatever you value.

My intent and joy is just to do what I can to help you get off to the best start – or RE-start – that you can, with minimal diversions, break-downs and frustrations!

by Barb Shelton

Connecting Hearts ~ Now and Forever

by Barb Shelton

$5

As we look at all the many components of this topic how to prevent rebellion, communicate, etc., remember that the how-to’s, steps, and signs are all for nothing if we do not have our children’s hearts. I am amazed at how many people do not have good, healthy, flowing  relationships with their kids, and yet they assume this is normal and natural and that it’s okay for disrespect to reign in the home. Indeed it IS "normal"; but it's certainly not God's "norm"! He has SO much MORE for His precious people! Namely peace, harmony, enjoyable interactions, contentedness of all, parents and children. This eBook is a good place to start to regain all that, if you've lost it, or to get it if you never have!

The eBook includes a "Personal Workspace" for you to personalize and process everything Barb presents in the eBook so that you don't just "read it and leave it," but so that you can actually get a good start on improving relationships within your family - starting with you.

Creating, Organizing, & Documenting

High School Classes

The

Heart of True Education

by Barb Shelton

$7

True education is so much more than mere academics! And until we understand what it really is, we will operate out of fear rather than wisdom. Before you go one more inch on your path of homeschooling, make sure you are headed in the right direction!  In this workshop Barb will help you discern ~ and encourage you to follow ~ the voice of the Lord for your own family over the many loud voices of the world. And because the primary purpose of true education is "preparing us for the works God has prepared beforehand that we may walk in them," what's "right and best" will be different for each family and each child. A generic, one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter education does not, indeed, fit all! Broadening your view of "education" and getting a scriptural "God' eye view" of it is essential to making homeschooling all that it can be! You will save yourself hundreds of dollars in unused, misused or overused curriculum, and years of frustration! Too many people find out too late that they were on the wrong path! With vulnerability and humor, she offers much spiritual and practical encouragement, research, examples, and scripture verses that will release you from fear and intimidation of homeschooling through high school and help keep you from missing out on God's richest blessings for you and your student!

Honing Your

Conversational Skill Set

by Barb Shelton

$6

When you think of the term “good conversationalist," what comes to mind? Someone who is talkative, always has something interesting to say, is the “life of the party” and the “star” of any conversation?

How do you feel about conversing with people? Confident and at ease? Or do you feel shy, embarrassed, and uncomfortable – hesitant to engage in conversation with people you don’t know? Or even people you do know?

Did you know you don’t even have to be all that interesting, engaging, or fascinating – at least in your own eyes – to be an excellent conversationalist? Yes, I truly mean excellent!!!

This is an area that many lack confidence in, especially because of our culture. In some ways social media helps us connect better, but in other ways it actually prevents us from connecting in deeper, more meaningful ways. Many of us have a desire to connect in person with people, but lack the skills to do so, or at least the confidence to use those skills. And responding to all this...  Honing Your Conversational Skill Set!

Does the thought of homeschooling through high school give you the shivers every time you think of it? Whether high school is still several years away or you're already DOing it, you don't have to continue to be plagued by fear any longer!

Deal with the myths, intimidations and misperceptions head-on, and once and for all! It takes some time to go through this process, so do yourself a favor and get thinking about it EARLY ON.

The focus for this workshop is high school concerns ~ which are best to get OUT of the way as early on as possible ~ we will NOT be focusing on "high school how-to's."

It is the fears at this level that are delved into, like the diploma issue, can I do this, will my child be missing out. With these fears dealt with (a clean swift "death blow") you will be free to approach high school with vision and confidence, and not break out in a cold sweat with every thought of HIGH SCHOOL! You can actually LOOK FORWARD to it, which parents have told me they DO, once the fears have been annihilated!

"4 Things I Like Best About Form+U+la" by Sue Howe

Comments from several happy readers

The tendency at the high school level for those just starting out, and even for seasoned homeschoolers who, up until high school, have taken a more creative approach, is, as one homeschool mom said, to "just buckle down, take the textbooks by the horns and just DO it!" She sadly added: "The joy went right out the window!" This book is oozing with inspiration and practical HELP to homeschool through high school with joy!!!  It contains: record-keeping ideas, what to do about requirements, how to translate real-life learning into senior high classes and credits, how to set up your own high school Master Framework Plan, class "plans" for many classes, masters for transcripts and diplomas, creative grading guidelines, learning guides for many subject areas, and complete how-to's for setting up a student notebook.  ...  The only version of this book that is still available is the (this) e-book.

Child Training Tips

by Pastor Reb Bradley

ORDER FROM AMAZON

"What I wish I had known when my children were young."

I (Barb) agree with this statement said of this book: "This the most practical Christian parenting book ever been published. It contains the help many parents wish they had had when their children were young...

This is not just another book on parenting -- it is unique. It is a manual consisting of symptom lists which identify behavior problems, and expose trouble spots in parenting. It is all about revealing parenting blind spots."

[A review of it on Amazon:]  "A friend lent me her copy of this book. It has been extremely helpful. An answer to prayer. I felt so lost as a parent, a single parent, who longs to honor God in how I raise my child. This book has given me clarity and direction. I am going to purchase my own copy to always have close by. I’m so thankful for this book. I highly recommend it."

Dumbing Us Down

by John Taylor Gatto

ORDER FROM AMAZON

After over 100 years of mandatory schooling in the U.S., literacy rates have dropped, families are fragmented, learning "disabilities" are skyrocketing, and children and youth are increasingly disaffected. Thirty years of teaching in the public school system led John Taylor Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory governmental schooling is to blame, accomplishing little but to teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine.

He became a fierce advocate of families and young people taking back education and learning, arguing that "genius is as common as dirt," but that conventional schooling is driving out the natural curiosity and problem-solving skills we're born with, replacing it with rule-following, fragmented time, and disillusionment.

Gatto's radical treatise on public education, a New Society Publishers bestseller for 25 years, continues to bang the drum for an unshackling of children and learning from formal schooling. Now, in an ever-more-rapidly changing world with an explosion of alternative routes to learning, it's poised to continue to shake the world of institutional education for many more years.

For the Children's Sake

by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

ORDER FROM AMAZON

Shows parents and teachers how children's learning experiences can be extended to every aspect of life, giving them a new richness, stability, and joy for living.

Every parent and teacher wants to give his or her children the best education possible. We hope that the education we provide is a joyful adventure, a celebration of life, and preparation for living. But sadly, most education today falls short of this goal.

For the Children's Sake is a book about what education can be, based on a Christian understanding of what it means to be human-to be a child, a parent, a teacher-and on the Christian meaning of life. The central ideas have been proven over many years and in almost every kind of educational situation, including ideas that Susan and Ranald Macaulay have implemented in their own family and school experience.

For the Children's Sake will benefit parents and teachers in any educational setting-homeschooling, public school, or private school. This new edition features an updated cover design.

[On the back of the book:]  "What is behind today's raging political corruption, mass illiteracy and cultural disintegration? The research points to the public school system ~ the origin of the worst ideas and most destructive influences in our society. The research also says that the destructive influences are about to become much worse, as the public school system trades its academic mandate for a federal position as a bureaucratic employment agency run by economic and social engineers.  Government officials have proven themselves unresponsive to the complaints of teachers and parents, and powerless to stop the insanity. The only solution left is in the hands of parents, and parents alone. To protect their children from the new demands of the federal system, parents must withdraw their children and assume complete responsibility for their education. Parents who are concerned about their country and their children are leaving the system in record numbers. You can too, and this book will show you how and why to do it immediately."  (NOTE:  This book used to sell at $10, but it was stored in a moist place, so the two staples binding it have rusted just a bit ~ thus the $2 discount!)

Helen Keller: The Story of My Life

by Helen Keller

ORDER FROM AMAZON

When she was 19 months old, Helen Keller (1880–1968) suffered a severe illness that left her blind and deaf. Not long after, she also became mute. Her tenacious struggle to overcome these handicaps — with the help of her inspired teacher, Anne Sullivan — is one of the great stories of human courage and dedication. In this classic autobiography, first published in 1903, Miss Keller recounts the first 22 years of her life, including the magical moment at the water pump when, recognizing the connection between the word "water" and the cold liquid flowing over her hand, she realized that objects had names. Subsequent experiences were equally noteworthy: her joy at eventually learning to speak, her friendships with Oliver Wendell Holmes, Edward Everett Hale and other notables, her education at Radcliffe (from which she graduated cum laude), and-underlying all-her extraordinary relationship with Miss Sullivan, who showed a remarkable genius for communicating with her eager and quick-to-learn pupil. These and many other aspects of Helen Keller's life are presented here in clear, straightforward prose full of wonderful descriptions and imagery that would do credit to a sighted writer. Completely devoid of self-pity, yet full of love and compassion for others, this deeply moving memoir offers an unforgettable portrait of one of the outstanding women of the twentieth century.

Home Grown Kids

by Dr. Raymond Moore (on Amazon)

ORDERED FROM AMAZON

This book by Dr. Raymond Moore is the one that turned me from "Homeschooling is the stupidest idea I've ever heard" to "Yes, I will homeschool - and DID homeschool all three of our kids from start to graduation"! It is not "required reading" for this course, but I cannot recommend it highly enough. It WILL change your thinking!

But don't just take MY word for it, here are a few comments I found on the internet, which, combined, make for a great mini-workshop!

"The basic principles in this book were eye-opening and thought-provoking. I'm no longer so fearful of the homeschooling idea and have gained a desire to know more as a result of reading Home Grown Kids."

"I used this book and gained so much from it. The author is so insightful, practical, educational, and spiritual. His advice worked for my child. Thanks God for this book. I am a pharmacist, and found that this book is not outdated at all since I am more traditional in my practice. I do believe a baby also needs to rest their digestive tract before the next meal. We are only stewards for God in taking care of our children. They have to learn to obey us out of reverence to God. Love this book."

"Home Grown Kids is a great resource for encouragement and advice for new parents and seasoned parents, too. I enjoyed the reasoning behind the choice to keep children at home for education. I think this book will help the skeptical parent who isn't sure about homeschooling, and may also need help in learning about how children "work" best in their differing stages of development."

The

Key to Your Child's Heart

by Gary Smalley

ORDER FROM AMAZON

 $12.00

"A repeat bestseller for two decades, this child-rearing classic cuts to the heart of the anger and alienation that mar so many modern homes.

In this ultimately practical book, Gary Smalley outlines effective steps for parents to open up a child that has shut them out. He describes family-tested ways for parents to set limits and enforce them, and he reveals the simple but powerful secret for achieving a close-knit family.

Learn proven parenting methods that can spell the difference between an angry, rebellious, distant child and a happy, cooperative one."

From Barb:  This is the book I mention in my "Let's DO This!" video called "Getting Your Kids' Hearts" as being very helpful to me in doing just that! Among many other things, it contains a 4-page list of things kids said their parents do that hurts or disappoints them. I sat in the rocking chair with both of my then-young kids and went over that list, asking them to tell me what on that list *I* had done. I thought there might be just a very few things...  there were many. I was gutted, but also compelled to the feet of Jesus to ask for forgiveness, and then to also show me how to change my selfish ways. One of the hardest, best things I have ever done. You can't come out of wrong relating until you know what you're doing wrong - and ask the ones you've hurt for forgiveness - which I did there in that rocking chair - with many tears.

It presents three easy framework options which you can use to help your child discover, one bite-sized step at a time, the basics of phonics. Just the right size for the budding reader to work with, it's bound at the top for easy writing for both "lefties" and "righties."

The sounds are presented in alphabetical order for quick access. And on each page are two charts, each with a different sound or phonogram, with 7 spaces in which the child can write in words as they are discovered in real life and as the child is read to. The

Messie's Manual

by Sandra Felton

ORDER FROM AMAZON

Identifies the most common problems in keeping a house clean and neat, explains how to organize cooking, cleaning, and household chores, and offers suggestions on storage, tough cleaning jobs, and family cooperation.

[From a review on Amazon:]  "I love, love, LOVED this book. I wish I could say I overcame my "messie" ways already, but sadly, I have not. I do, however, have a much better outlook on life since I understand myself better.. haha!! I had always struggled with the fact that I knew I wasn't "dirty".. now I know.. I'm just messy! This book helped me see that I have been wired to "overlook" chaos and disorder... and now I notice it more and it's helping me on my journey to become more like a "cleanie" (read the book, you'll understand)! One of my best friends is a "cleanie" and this book cracked us up as we read the definitions of each personality and saw how perfectly we were described.... we certainly understand each other better now-- I don't get offended when she instinctively comes in to work on my dishes and she doesn't get offended that sometimes, it's just gonna seem a little crazy in my home =)"

Our Story ~ of and by Dave & Barb Shelton

by Dave & Barb Shelton

Dave and I shared "our story" at church in 2018. This is a testimony of God's amazing power at work, even when He has only extremely lumpy and imperfect clay to work with, and even when the clay does NOT want to be worked with! We will have been married for 47 years (as of summer 2022), but ours is NOT a "they got married and live happily ever after" story. Several years ago we came very close to divorce, even being separated for six months. Our story is not simple, not easy to hear, nor will what happened with us be true for ~ or work for ~ other couples in similar (sinking) boats.  But we KNOW that nothing is impossible with God!!!!!  And we love to tell what He did to save our marriage from the brink of hell, and redeem it to the point of not being able to recognize it from our earlier years. Our hope is that those needing it will be infused with renewed hope for their own difficult situations, and that others, doing "okay," will gain further insight for how to keep their marriages from drifting into the "danger zone." At the very least, you'll come away simply saying "Wow!!! GOD IS AMAZING!!!" And, of course, you will know "us" a little (lot) better in the process. (46 minutes)

The

Release of the Spirit

by Watchman Nee

ORDER FROM AMAZON

Anyone who serves God will discover sooner or later that the great hindrances he has in the Lord's work is not others, but himself. He will discover that his outward man (soul) is not in harmony with his inward man (spirit). Both tend to go toward two opposite directions from each other.

He will also sense the inability of his outward man to submit to the inner control of his regenerated spirit. His greatest difficulty lies in his outward man, which hinders him from using his spirit.

Each one of us has as much of the same "Jacob-nature" in us. Our only hope is that the Lord may blaze a way out of us, breaking our outward man - breaking it to such a degree that the inward man may come out and be seen. This is precious! This is the way to serve the Lord.

Romance God's Way

by Eric & Leslie Ludy

ORDER FROM AMAZON

From a review of it on Amazon:  "This book is awesome! There are no other words to describe it. It is a book that will stay with you. Eric and Leslie tell their story as very humble people, giving God the credit for every good thing that has happened in their lives. This book is by no means a horror/thriller, but I read it all in one evening; I just couldn't put it down. It isn't a bunch of guidelines, rules, regulations, dating 101 type stuff, it is just a beautiful story. Rather than the authors telling the reader he/she needs to put God in the center, it shows the reader how. You will grow closer to God and not even know you are in the process of it, guaranteed!"

And another: "This book opened my eyes and heart in so many ways- God truly spoke to me through it. Eric and Leslie are a great example of God's faithfulness to those who choose to obey- I want God to write my love story- and it will be more romantic than any man could ever compose! I challenge you to give God control - It is so much easier and more rewarding!!!"

Written for parents with children of any age, this insightful book provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child's heart into the paths of life. Shepherding a Child's Heart gives fresh biblical approaches to child rearing.

Shepherding a Child’s Heart is about how to speak to the heart of your child (Luke 6:45). Written for parents with children of any age, this insightful book provides perspectives and procedures for shepherding your child’s heart into the paths of life.

In this revised editionDr. Tedd Tripp draws on his thirty years experience as a pastor, counselor, school administrator, and father, and shares insights gained in many years of teaching this material in conferences worldwide.

Elisabeth Elliot said:

  • "If you are looking for the right perspective and practical help, you won’t find a more excellent guide." — Pastor John MacArthur

  • "Dr. Tripp’s material on parenting is the clearest, most biblically framed, and most helpful that I have ever encountered." — Dr. Edward Welch

Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la

These are the 45 Learning Guides Forms in section 4 of the book Senior High: A Home-Designed Form+U+la plus twice as many ~ 90+ in all!!!  These are to help your student get more learning value out of any experience, and/or document it.  Here's how I create these:

1) Start with an experience or learning opportunity: a field trip, a concert, babysitting, considering feasibility of moving out on own, housework skills, a TV documentary or movie, an art show at the library or mall, computer activities (of a valuable nature), interviewing a police officer,  attending to a play, doing a room make-over

2) Think through what you want them to discover, learn, notice, find out, know, or particularly remember or be aware of experiencing.

3) Make this into a search-it-out format and/or a chart that will accommodate, enhance, and bring out what you want them to document.
