Season of Re-education & Renewing of the Mind ____________________________
(#20) Commonly-Asked Questions About This Course
Answered by Amy Beckel
A: I'm a lover of "hard copy" too....so I know what you mean about being able to read it away from the computer and curled up in your favorite chair, or in bed at the end of a busy day. My suggestion would be to print out the pages and put them in a folder of some type, or even staple them together, so you'd have all the info ready to read without having to get back online. It's VERY worth the time to carefully read ALL of the questions/answers Barb has provided (except perhaps question #10, which deals with her no-longer-offered video course). (Barb also links several other pertinent articles...print those out, too, to understand even more about the course.) That way you are digesting the information for yourself, and starting on the way to that "renewal" that we all need.
Q: Do I understand it correctly that the "jumpstart plan" awards me the certificate before I finish the course?
A: No, the Jumpstart book(s) are to help you and your child to plan his/her activities during the time you'll be spending on your "season." They're not connected with the "season" in any other way. However, Barb can send you a "certificate of participation" (not "completion") during the time you are working through the course, if you feel you need something on hand to show someone that indeed you are taking a homeschool course.
Q: I would like to get everything together for my school district so I can "rest easy" that I am legal.
A: Actually, the school district has NO business or authority to ask for or see any of your stuff... You tell them you are taking a course, and that's the extent of their involvement, by Washington State law. It would probably be very helpful for you to read all of the articles at Barb's Article Chart under the section "Legal, Testing, & Government Issues." Especially the first one ~ a biggie, but a must-read-and-seriously-and-prayerfully consider for EVERY homeschooler ~ called "Obeying the Law, Testing, & Qualifying to Homeschool."
Q: Does this course consist more of philosophical material or academic?
A:
Both. If I told you any more than that, you'd miss the learning experience itself!
Q: Can you tell me the general cost for the full course at once including how much shipping will be?
A:
I'm so sorry, but I really can't. There are just too many variables, including
the ages of your children, and how many of the resources you have or can borrow.
Here's a link to the entire Course
Contents. Go through that and pick out the resources you'll need; the prices are right there for you. You can even add them to your shopping cart as you go through, and then the ordering pages will total them up and tell you the shipping charges, so you'll get the exact figure instead of my estimate.
[From Barb: Even if Amy
knew all your variables, I would not allow her to. She is a tremendous
burden-lifter for me, and answers many emails for me purely out of the goodness
of her heart. She is as busy a homeschool mom as you are and I don't want
to lose her, (or I would just have to get offline entirely) or allow her to get
buried under a pile of "to do's" that are really things that. On
a practical level, she can either answer 10 emails for me or figure out your
list.
Q: Why would I want to take this course as opposed to any of the other courses that I've seen offered?
A: Barb's course is unique among all others I've seen. It's designed to help you re-educate and renew your mind and heart regarding true education. To my mind this is much more helpful and foundational for homeschoolers than the "curriculum" type of course.
Q: We are homeschoolers and will possibly be transferred to Washington soon. What's the best way to get information and register for your correspondence course?
A:
First, you'll want to familiarize yourself
with Washington's law. Barb has her own write-up on this right here.
Next, if you missed it, read the Course
Intro that Barb has put together to give you a quick overview. Then,
